Autumn in the Wolds: The Best of Lincolnshire on Your Doorstep

Golden lanes, near empty beaches and thousands of grey seals. Our pick of the best things to do around our Lincolnshire Wolds holiday homes this autumn.

Our two holiday homes sit in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds, one in Fulstow and one in South Reston, and autumn is honestly one of our favourite times of year to be here. The lanes go quiet, the countryside turns golden, and some of the best things this part of Lincolnshire has to offer are right on the doorstep.

Here is what we would recommend if you are staying with us this season.

Explore Louth, Britain’s Finest Market Town

You are just a few minutes from Louth, and if you have not spent a proper morning there, you are in for a treat. Named Britain’s Finest Market Town by BBC Countryfile, Louth has over 70% independent businesses, a food scene the Hairy Bikers once called a “food mecca”, and a market running on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Pick up local cheese, fresh bread, Lincolnshire produce, and something for dinner from a butcher that has been trading for over a century. It is one of those towns that rewards a slow wander.

Walk the Wolds From Your Back Door

Hubbard’s Hills, just outside Louth, is one of the most beautiful spots in the county and especially stunning in autumn when the leaves are turning. It is easy going, dog friendly and completely free. For something longer, the Belchford circular is a 12 kilometre loop through the Wolds with a pub lunch at the Blue Bell Inn at the end of it, which, frankly, is reason enough to do it.

Both are within a short drive of the properties.

Donna Nook Grey Seals, Late October to December

One of Britain’s great wildlife experiences, and it happens right here on the Lincolnshire coast, less than 20 minutes from the properties. Every autumn from late October through December, thousands of grey seals come ashore at Donna Nook Nature Reserve near North Somercotes to give birth to their pups. A viewing area runs alongside the colony so you can get surprisingly close to mothers, pups and enormous bull seals without disturbing them. Peak time is mid to late November. Around 46,000 people visit each year, so plan your trip on a weekday if you can, wrap up warm and bring your camera.

Thousands of grey seals come ashore barely twenty minutes from the front door, and in November you can stand a few metres from a pup that is only days old.

Saltfleet Beach and the Dunes

A few minutes up the road from the properties, Saltfleet is one of Lincolnshire’s best kept secrets. A vast, largely unspoilt stretch of sand backed by dunes, rarely busy even in summer, and in autumn it is practically yours. The Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve runs alongside the beach, with walking trails through coastal marsh, and in autumn the sea buckthorn pulls in migrating birds. Dogs are very welcome. It is the kind of place you go to for an hour and stay for three.

Mablethorpe for an Easy Seaside Day

Mablethorpe is a short drive along the coast and makes for a classic, relaxed seaside day out in September or October, before the chill really sets in. Fish and chips, a walk along the promenade and a look at the beach. It is unpretentious and easy, and the promenade is lovely around sunset if you time it right.

We Have Availability This Autumn

Both properties, Fulstow and South Reston, are available to book this September, October and November. You are in the Wolds, close to the coast, minutes from Louth, and perfectly placed for everything on this list.
